Biography

Afghan. Had been a lance-corporal in British army, fought under General Lord Roberts in Kandahar, awarded two medals. Granted mining licence in W.A., 1893 (Stevens 1989, pp. 12, 148, West Australian 6 July 1897, p.5). Probably the same AHMED KHAN who played a prominent role in Perth community during 1890s, organising the 'Bakreed' (Bakrid) festival of sacrifice. In May 1897 he advertised that the 'Mahommedan Christmas Festival' would be celebrated at his home, in Vincent Street, Perth, with camel meat 'served out free of charge to those who wish to try same; it is considered better than beef' (West Australian 13 May 1897, p.7).
