Other trades: miners
The growth of Australia’s mining industry increased opportunities for the Muslim cameleers, and some of them attempted mining on their own account. This was forbidden in the Western Australian goldfields, where licences were not permitted for foreigners. In South Australia and New South Wales the regulations were not as tight, and several ‘Afghans’ took up mining, particularly in the Broken Hill district, when conditions worsened in the transport industry.
