Carrying wool

The arrival of camels and the Muslim cameleers enabled greater areas of the inland to be opened up for sheep grazing. Bullock teams had not been capable of dependably delivering wool to ports and railheads during drought, but the cameleers made this possible. Strings of as many as 70 camels, each carrying two large wool bales with a combined weight of 400 kilograms or more, plied inland tracks and roads.
