Elder Expedition, 1891 – 1892
The Elder Expedition was funded by pastoralist and camel entrepreneur Thomas Elder, with the objective of exploring western South Australia and Western Australia. Accompanied by naturalists and geologists, the expedition was supported by four cameleers and 44 camels from Elder’s Beltana camel depot. The leader was the surveyor and prospector David Lindsay, who later formed a partnership with camel merchant Mahmoud Hassan. Despite the expedition’s difficulties, the cameleers safely conveyed the party and its scientific specimens for more than 6800 kilometres.
